A Guide to Deal with Linux Problems

Linux never gives any problem. This myth in the IT field has come into existence with the immense popularity of Linux. There are situations when Linux do give problems and one needs to fix those by the process of troubleshooting. To do so you may take the help from your vendor, the internet, local users or some Linux user. Moreover, if you are a Linux user, you would love to solve your Linux problems by engaging yourself in your own troubleshooting.

To solve the technical problems, you need specialised knowledge as well as the inclination to do so. Just a “symptom-fix” approach is not sufficient for trouble shooting the Linux problems. You need to follow five simple steps to trouble shoot the Linux problems and you are sure to get success in most of the cases. The first three steps are to determine the problem and find out the cause behind it whereas the last two steps involves problem solving that is basically fixing the problem.

  1. Knowledge: It is your knowledge about Linux that is sure to make you understand the things better. Knowledge is the basic step to solve any Linux problem. The Linux course, reading books, attending seminars related to Linux can increase your power to handle the problems in a systematic way.
  2. Observation: If your observing power is strong, you are ready to take up the task of troubleshooting. Observing and then find out what is wrong with the system can take you a step ahead in solving the problem. Gathering more information leads to the root cause and thus brings solution to the existing problem.
  3. Deduction: Deducing is the next step after observing the things thoroughly. This step is really important as it is amalgamation of art, science, intuition, mental process and magic. All these together leads you to the root cause or the source of the problem.
  4. Action: You need to now apply your knowledge to troubleshoot the problem that you have deduced through observation. Once the problem is identified, you are required to take correct action.
  5. Testing: Once you apply some repairing action, you must test in between to find whether the repair action is moving in the right direction or not. If not, move to the first step.
